Riders for Health

Here's a wonderful organisation of social entrepreneurs called Riders for Health.

After battling with the roads in many African countries I can appreciate the dificult task of accessing healthcare, especially if there is a pot-holed nightmare of a road between you and a clinic. This organisation - now operating in 7 African countries - decided that the answer was to bring the medic or medication or health testing equipment to the patient - and the best way to do that is to use small motorbikes.

This is a short film made for BBC World News by Alvin Hall.

Riders_for_health_3 My main fundraising effort with the African Brew Ha Ha is directed towards health and education charities serving Imizamu Yethu in Hout Bay, Cape Town. This is being administered in the UK by the Rotary Club of Blackpool Sunrise who will liaise with Hout Bay Rotary Club  in South Africa, so every penny will go towards the nominated charities. Rotary clubs take no administration costs whatsoever; it's all voluntary.

But for people who live further afield I have an alternative cause to which people can donate via t'internet.

Riders for Health dovetails nicely with the overland trip because it trains people to ride and maintain off-road bikes in Africa so they can provide healthcare in remote areas that only a bike can reach.
